BerlinBerlin’s U-Bahn Tests Techno DJ Sets in New Cultural Pilot Programe

Berlin, long hailed as the global capital of techno, is once again embracing its electronic music roots— this time, underground, quite literally. The city’s public transport company, BVG (Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe), has recently tested bringing live music performances, including techno DJ sets, to its U-Bahn stations as part of a new cultural pilot initiative.

The project aims to “bring the lively and vibrant energy of Berlin into the stations” by inviting local techno DJs to perform along the U8 metro line. Meanwhile, jazz musicians are planned for the U1 and U3 lines, creating a diverse musical experience for daily commuters and tourists alike.

The first performances are expected to take place at Kottbusser Tor station in Kreuzberg—one of Berlin’s most culturally rich and dynamic neighborhoods. In addition to live music, the initiative includes art and lighting installations that will transform these transit spaces into immersive cultural environments.

This move is part of a broader pilot program launched by BVG between February 2024 and March 2025 to improve the safety, cleanliness, and overall atmosphere of Berlin’s metro system. The company believes that music can help enhance well-being and reduce antisocial behavior in these public spaces.

However, not everyone is on board. Some critics argue that the initiative may be used to displace vulnerable communities, such as the homeless population, without addressing the root causes of urban inequality. Others have questioned the financial priorities, noting the ongoing underfunding of Berlin’s public transport infrastructure.

Despite the controversy, the project underscores Berlin’s continued dedication to integrating culture into everyday life. Following UNESCO’s 2024 recognition of Berlin’s techno scene as Intangible Cultural Heritage, this initiative feels like a natural—and uniquely Berlin—next step.Heritage, this initiative feels like a natural—and uniquely Berlin—next step.
