White Claw x Defected

Can a dancefloor make you lifelong friends?

White Claw and Defected just ran the experiment to find out a few days ago. Ten strangers, one island, twenty-four hours – no small talk required.

That was the premise behind Find Your People, a first-of-its-kind social experiment by White Claw and Defected Records designed to test a question the dance music world has always taken on faith: does the dance-floor actually forge real, lasting connection, or is that just something we tell ourselves at 4am?

To find out, White Claw teamed up with social community app Cliq to match ten like-minded strangers, fly them to Ibiza and see what happened when the only shared reference point was a love of music. The group arrived with nothing in common but a Cliq match and a plane ticket. What they left with, by all accounts, was something closer to a bond, built not over dinner-party conversation, but over music, movement and the singular euphoria of Ibiza itself.

It’s the kind of claim brands make often and prove rarely. This time, someone actually built the experiment to test it.

The 24 hours began with a White Claw x Defected villa takeover, soundtracked by a lineup pulled straight from the label’s family – including a b2b set from Defected and Mas Tiempo regular DJammin and rising Dutch talent Joëlla Jackson. It was an intimate, low-stakes way to break the ice before the real test: a night out. From the villa, the group moved to Chinois Ibiza for a night with Defected, where whatever connections had started forming over cocktails and a first dance got put through the paces of an actual dance-floor, among an actual crowd of club-goers.

If you wanted to stress-test the theory that house music builds community, you couldn’t pick a better lab than Defected in Ibiza. The label has been embedded in the island’s DNA since 2003, growing from an underground favourite into one of dance music’s true global institutions, with a roster of legendary residencies and a footprint that’s shaped club culture well beyond the White Isle. If music has the power to connect strangers, this is where it’s had the most practice.

Find Your People wasn’t just a fun stunt, it’s tied to a real number White Claw is trying to move. The brand has set itself the goal of creating 50,000 new friendships this summer, a response to what’s increasingly being called the “friendship recession.” The data behind that term is stark: the share of adults with no close friends has quadrupled in recent years, while the share with ten or more close friends has dropped by nearly threefold.

Against that backdrop, betting on a dance-floor to rebuild social connection isn’t just a marketing hook, but a bet that communal, physical, music-driven experiences might be one of the few things still capable of pulling people out of isolation.

Ten strangers went to Ibiza with nothing in common but a music taste algorithm. Twenty-four hours, two parties, and one Defected set later, the experiment’s conclusion tracked with what ravers have insisted for decades: put the right people on the right dance-floor with the right music and voila – something real can happen fast.

Whether it lasts a lifetime, only the ten of them will know. But for one night in Ibiza, at least, the theory held up.
